Biografía
Paul Pfeiffer was born in 1966 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and lives and works in New York City. Working across video, photography, installation, sculpture and sound, he examines the visual language of mass-media spectacle, particularly imagery drawn from professional sports, celebrity culture, cinema and televised events. By transforming familiar images, Pfeiffer reveals the systems of production, power and collective identification that underpin contemporary visual culture.
Pfeiffer frequently samples and meticulously manipulates existing media footage, removing central figures, isolating particular gestures or constructing repetitive video loops that disrupt the original narratives. These strategies direct attention towards what ordinarily remains peripheral or invisible, inviting viewers to reconsider how images shape individual perception, collective memory and notions of belonging. His works range from small-scale videos and sculptural objects to immersive audiovisual installations, often investigating the relationships between spectacle, spectatorship, devotion and mass participation.
He received a BFA in printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1987 and an MFA from Hunter College, New York, in 1994. From 1997 to 1998, he participated in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program.
Pfeiffer’s work has been presented internationally at institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; MUSAC, León; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; and Sammlung Goetz, Munich. His first retrospective in the United States, Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom, opened at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in 2023 and surveyed twenty-five years of his practice. It subsequently travelled to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in 2024–2025 and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago in 2025.
His distinctions include a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship, the inaugural Bucksbaum Award at the 2000 Whitney Biennial and the Alpert Award in the Arts in 2009. He has also participated in residency programmes at the World Trade Center, the MIT List Visual Arts Center, Artpace San Antonio and the Atlantic Center for the Arts. Pfeiffer is represented by Paula Cooper Gallery, carlier | gebauer, Perrotin and Thomas Dane Gallery.
