Biografía

Brad Kahlhamer was born in Tucson, Arizona, in 1956 and lives and works between New York City and Mesa, Arizona. Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, and music, he has developed a multidisciplinary practice centred on the concept of the "third place"—a psychological and aesthetic meeting point between contrasting personal histories and cultural experiences. Of Indigenous American ancestry, Kahlhamer was adopted as an infant by a German-American family and raised in Arizona and Wisconsin. His work brings together this complex personal history and his adult life within the artistic and musical culture of New York’s Lower East Side. Filtering highly personal iconography through a neo-expressionist lens, he draws on twentieth-century abstraction, German Expressionism, Indigenous American ledger drawings, underground comics, and punk music. After moving to New York in 1982, he worked for ten years as an illustrator and art director at the Topps Chewing Gum Company before becoming a full-time artist in 1993. Throughout his career, Kahlhamer has developed a distinctive visual language that combines accomplished draftsmanship with the improvisational energy of an underground musician. His work investigates the "displaced identity," navigating complex questions of authenticity, cultural representation, and the historical categorisation of Indigenous American art. By combining the artistic environment of downtown Manhattan with references to Indigenous histories and visual traditions, he creates a "subjective vocabulary" that resists fixed definitions of identity and belonging. Kahlhamer has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including presentations at Galerie Sophie Scheidecker in Paris, Garth Greenan Gallery in New York, the Tucson Museum of Art, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut. His work is held in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Denver Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, and TBA21 Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary. Kahlhamer received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grant in 2006, participated in a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation residency in 2015, received a Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant in 2020, and was named a Civitella Ranieri Foundation Fellow in 2022. In autumn 2023, he served as the Alex Katz Chair in Painting at The Cooper Union. His work continues to explore the intersections of memory, geography, cultural inheritance, and personal mythology, articulating a layered and continually evolving vision of contemporary American identity.
