Biografía

Thomas Cyrill Demand (born 1964 in Munich, Germany) is a German visual artist, sculptor and photographer best known for his meticulously crafted photographs of paper and cardboard reconstructions of spaces, objects and architectural settings that look uncannily real but are entirely fabricated. Although often discussed in relation to photography, Demand describes himself primarily as a conceptual artist for whom photography is a central artistic process rather than documentary evidence. Demand studied art extensively across Europe. He began at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich (1987–1989) and continued at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1989–1992), later spending time at the Cité des Arts in Paris and earning an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London in the early 1990s. These varied academic experiences helped shape his interest in sculpture, representation and image culture. In the early 1990s Demand began making life-sized or scaled paper and cardboard models of interiors and objects drawn from press photographs, media imagery and architectural spaces. He then photographed these reconstructions with large-format cameras and destroyed the original models, leaving only the final photograph as the exhibited art object. This systematic transformation from model to image challenges assumptions about photography’s ability to document reality and highlights the constructed nature of visual representation. His photographs are usually printed large scale and presented without frames, reinforcing their illusionistic presence. Demand’s subjects range from quotidian interiors to spaces tied to historical and political contexts, and his works often explore the tension between memory, media imagery and material absence. His approach has been described as a rigorous interrogation of how images mediate our understanding of cultural and political events — even when those images become strangely familiar or eerily empty upon close inspection. Beyond still photography, Demand has also worked with film and moving images, applying similar model-based methods to create looped or animated works that explore narrative, perception and media logic. Over his career he has exhibited widely around the world, with solo shows at major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin and The Stutter of History presentations across venues such as Jeu de Paume in Paris and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Since 2011 he has taught at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (HFBK), where he holds a professorship in sculpture with a focus on photography. Demand lives and works between Berlin and Los Angeles, and his art continues to provoke reflection on the fragility of visual truth and the complexity of image culture in contemporary society.
