Biografía

Olaf Nicolai was born in 1962 in Halle an der Saale, Germany, and grew up in Chemnitz, then known as Karl-Marx-Stadt. He studied German language and literature at the universities of Leipzig, Vienna, and Budapest, completing a doctorate in 1992 with a thesis on the poetics of the Wiener Gruppe. He also studied applied art in Schneeberg. This interdisciplinary academic background has remained closely connected to his artistic practice, which brings together sculpture, installation, sound, performance, photography, and conceptual forms of research. Since the early 1990s, Nicolai has developed a practice concerned with perception, systems of knowledge, cultural conventions, and the conditions through which everyday reality is experienced. Rather than working within a single medium, he often translates ideas derived from science, literature, history, architecture, and popular culture into precise and materially diverse situations. His works can take the form of objects, environments, sounds, images, performances, or interventions, frequently shifting attention from the individual artwork toward the circumstances in which it is encountered. A recurring aspect of Nicolai’s practice is his interest in processes that are usually overlooked or taken for granted. He examines how perception is structured by social conventions, technologies, institutional frameworks, and cultural codes, often creating works that require the viewer to become attentive to subtle changes in space, duration, sound, or context. His conceptual approach is therefore closely connected to material experience: ideas are not simply represented but translated into situations in which they can be observed, tested, or physically experienced. Nicolai has participated in major international exhibitions and art events, including documenta X in Kassel in 1997 and the Venice Biennale in 2001, 2005, and 2015. His work has also been presented in numerous museums, galleries, biennials, and public projects internationally. His practice encompasses both intimate and large-scale works, moving between the precise construction of individual objects and interventions that engage with architecture, public space, and collective experience. Alongside his artistic activity, Nicolai has maintained a strong engagement with teaching and artistic research. He is Professor of Sculpture and the Fundamentals of Three-Dimensional Design at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, where he leads a sculpture class. The Academy currently describes his field as “Sculpture and the Fundamentals of Three-Dimensional Design,” reflecting the broad conceptual and material scope of his approach. Nicolai’s work is held in major public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection in Berlin. Across sculpture, installation, sound, performance, and research-based projects, he continues to investigate the relationship between perception and knowledge, questioning how cultural and technological systems shape the ways in which we understand and experience the world.
