Biografía

Doug Aitken is an American multidisciplinary artist, born in Redondo Beach, California, in 1968. By dissolving the boundaries between media, space, and audience, his innovative work has made him a prominent figure in contemporary art. He studied illustration and earned a BFA from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena in 1991. After graduating, he moved to New York, where he began exhibiting widely and developing a practice encompassing photography, sculpture, film, sound, installation, architectural interventions, and live performance. Aitken soon attracted international attention with ambitious projects that transformed the ways in which viewers experience art. His multiscreen installations and immersive video works often combine narrative, environment, and movement, inviting audiences to engage both physically and emotionally with shifting landscapes and cultural contexts. One of his early breakthroughs was electric earth, a multiprojection installation that won the International Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1999 and helped establish his reputation for creating large-scale, sensory-rich environments. His later installation Sleepwalkers, presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, projected nocturnal urban narratives across several façades, blurring the boundaries between cinema and architecture. Projects such as Station to Station and Mirage have embraced nomadic and experiential formats, extending art beyond traditional gallery spaces. Over the course of more than three decades, Aitken’s work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Serpentine Gallery. He has received numerous honors, including the International Prize at the Venice Biennale, the Nam June Paik Art Center Prize, and the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award for Visual Arts. He lives and works between Los Angeles and New York, continuing to explore the intersections of media, environment, and human perception.
