Biografía

Tarek Atoui is a Lebanese artist and electroacoustic composer, born in Beirut in 1980 and currently based in Paris. He is known for his innovative exploration of sound as a medium capable of shaping perception. Through dynamic installations, experimental acoustic environments, and collaborative performances, Atoui creates immersive, multisensory experiences. His practice involves working with composers, craftspeople, and communities around the world to design and construct complex instruments that also function as sculptural objects. By investigating the acoustic properties of materials such as bronze, water, glass, and stone, he reveals the distinctive ways in which they transmit, produce, and reflect sound. Atoui’s work incorporates custom-built electronic instruments and advanced computer systems, while frequently engaging with contemporary social and political questions. By bringing together music, technology, and education, he emphasizes their potential as tools for expression, identity, and connection. Collaboration and community engagement lie at the heart of his practice, with audiences often invited to interact directly with his installations and participate in the experience of sound. His work has been presented at major international institutions and exhibitions, including the Serralves Foundation in Porto, Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, and the Venice Biennale. His works are also held in prominent collections, including those of Tate, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Pinault Collection. Atoui’s interdisciplinary approach reflects his ongoing commitment to redefining sound and music as shared and transformative experiences.
