Biografía
Dineo Seshee Bopape was born in 1981, in Polokwane, South Africa. Her artistic practice brings together sculpture, installation, video, sound, and organic and inorganic materials, often engaging with questions of collective memory, history, spirituality, sovereignty, and the relationship between the physical world and the histories inscribed within it. Her work considers how personal, political, and spiritual histories converge through materials such as soil, clay, stone, water, and found objects.
Bopape's practice is informed by histories of colonialism, enslavement, displacement, and resistance, with particular attention to the African diaspora and to forms of memory that have been suppressed or overlooked. Through material transformation and site-responsive installations, she explores the relationship between land, body, history, and collective memory.
She has presented her work internationally, including at Pirelli HangarBicocca, Milan; Ocean Space, Venice; Secession, Vienna; the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond; and The Museum of Modern Art, New York. She represented South Africa at the Venice Biennale in 2019.
