Details

The Art far Modern Architecture series by artist Marine Hugonnier consists of collages based on the front pages of newspapers from different countries. They often combine stories about the same historical event observed from culturally divergent points of view in order to reveal the geopolitical implications and different interpretations of the same reality in a particular context.

Taking the front pages of newspapers published on dates that coincide with major historical events of the 20th century—in this case the fall of Hitler—the artist conceals the images with silkscreened color blocks (blue, cyan, green, yellow, red, magenta and black) in a kind of visual censorship of collective memory. She thus establishes an anachronism between the present time of the artistic intervention and the past of the document, negating those iconic images that have become fixed in our minds through repetition and therefore encouraging a subjective reconfiguration of them.
