Biography

Neïl Beloufa is a French-Algerian contemporary artist and filmmaker, born in Paris in 1985, where he lives and works. Considered one of the most distinctive voices of his generation, he explores the intersections of reality, media, technology, and systems of belief in an increasingly digitally mediated world. He studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, Cooper Union in New York, and Le Fresnoy–Studio national des arts contemporains in Tourcoing, France. Beloufa’s practice encompasses film, sculpture, video, and technologically complex installations that create immersive sensory environments while examining power relations, digital surveillance, social interaction, and the ways in which information is produced and consumed. Drawing on imagery from internet culture, video games, and mass media, his works frequently blur the boundaries between reality and fiction, encouraging viewers to question their assumptions about perception and representation. His work has been presented in major solo exhibitions at institutions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, and Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan. His 2016 exhibition at MoMA was his first solo museum exhibition in New York, while the Palais de Tokyo presented his first major solo exhibition at a French institution in 2012. He has also participated in major international exhibitions, including the 2013 and 2019 editions of the Venice Biennale. Beloufa was nominated for the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2015 and for both the Artes Mundi Prize and the Nam June Paik Award in 2016. He received the Audi Talent Award in 2011 and the Meurice Prize for Contemporary Art in 2013. His works are held in major public and private collections, reflecting his significant contribution to contemporary art’s engagement with technology, media, and cultural systems.
